The President’s Message

Who said that spring was here? I think that the weather man was just keeping us on our toes. Cindy and I had moved out all our annuals that were growing in the basement and then the frost. I put plastic over them and then put an electric heater in to keep them warm. Anyway we have now pulled off all the covers and they seemed to have come through.
   It was with great sadness that I heard of the sudden passing of John Brettingham. He was involved in the flasking group.
   We did our final show of the season in Ottawa. Thanks to Pat Lynda and Cindy for giving me a hand. The RBG setup was nice and had quite a few plants in the display.
   The president’s picnic will be at Jim & Delores Brasch’s place on July 18, 2010 at 1:00 pm.  Please bring a chair and a salad or desert - soft drinks/juice and hamburgers/hot dogs will be supplied.  The address is:  2100 Highview Drive, Burlington, ON - Location:  From junction of Hwy #5 and Brant Street/Cedar Springs Rd go north (away from the lake) to the first right hand street, Highview Drive. 2100 is about the 8th house on right hand side.    I would like to thank Denise, Bob and Penney for putting in a lot of time at the 1st. RBG Garden Show, as well as all of the people who have volunteered throughout the past year to make our society great.

August 1, 2010 - SOOS Orchidfest and Toronto Centre AOS judging. AOS judging 10 am  Pot luck lunch 12 noon
Orchid speaker program after lunch. Fred Clarke, of Sunset Valley orchids (www.sunsetvalleyorchids.com) will be our guest speaker at this year's Summerfest. Fred will be making 2 presentations:
- “Today's Mini and Compact Cattleyas”
- “New Hybrids with Catasetum , Cycnoches and
   Mormodes ”
As well, he will be bringing orchids for sale. If you pre-order, there will be a 10% discount (July 19 pre-order deadline) - All members of Orchid Societies welcome! Plan to attend this unique event now! It is free!!!

Saturday Morning Greenhouse

Attention all Members - We are looking for someone to run the Saturday Morning Greenhouse - Anyone interested please contact Ben Boers.
   There are a number of very large orchid plants that need repotting so that the earlier flower production can be retained. Also a person with a special interest in caring for Dendrobiums would be appreciated. 
  It is also possible to work on pollination and flasking activity on Saturday mornings. Volunteers are not required to attend every Saturday, but some commitment to the collection should be demonstrated.
