The President’s Message

Season’s Greetings

Here we are coming up to a new year fast. We have done two shows and the next one will be in Feb. in Toronto. Our show is well underway with people busy making sure it will be a great success. There are also some areas still needing volunteers and training is provided. Please help out.
The 2010 show will be different than in the past as the RBG has been making changes to their operations format and we have been asked to work with them to make it a smooth transition. Again in 2010 there will be a new display at the RBG called Amazon. We will be putting a display up with this theme in mind. We will NOT be collecting a separate entrance fee for our show this time; instead the RBG will provide this aspect for our show. We have had meetings with the RBG regarding our involvement as a society of the RBG and we have a tentative agreement in place and hope this will work out for all. People coming to the RBG will be coming to see the activities at the RBG and that will include our show at the same time.
This month we will be having our Christmas auction on Dec. 20, so if you have too many plants and wish to donate to the auction or if you have any orchid related items, please feel free do so. Also if you wish to share your favorite cake or cookie snack it will be gratefully appreciated, coffee and tea will be provided. This will be a fun social event, so it will give you a chance to get to know some of the people around you and have a great time.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and season’s greetings to all.

Ben Boers

Attention Orchid Enthusiasts!!!!
Orchids from Ecuador

You are invited to join a number of other orchid enthusiasts in a pre-order of orchids and/or other plants from Ecuador.  We are planning to place the order around the end of December 2009 with Ecuagenera.  They have a list of currently available plants along with pre-order wholesale prices.  Copies of the list can be forwarded by Chris Foden or Pat Vuurman upon request.  Plants are generally near flowering size to flowering size when purchased.
Ecuagenera specializes in the culture, reproduction and legal sale of native Ecuadorian orchid species.  As the largest such company in Ecuador they have over 2,500 species under cultivation.  You can check out their website at http://www.ecuagenera.com.
We have invited Pepe and his crew from Ecuagenera to attend our 29th Annual Orchid Show & Sale at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, ON.  They will be here February 27-28, 2010 along with any plants that have been pre-ordered.
They will also bring plants for general sale but these will not be at the wholesale prices available to pre-order customers.  Should the group order reach their minimum a society discount will be applied.  Should you have some orchid on your wish list that does not appear on the availability list, inquiries can be made to ‘Sales at Ecuagenera’ to check whether a division of one of their stock plants might be purchased.
Orders are due to Chris or Pat along with funds by the end of December.  Please provide $US.  The total needed is the plant costs plus $5 per plant (for handling, documentation, inspection and transportation costs).  Canadian funds are by arrangement only with Chris or Pat.
Further information is available from either Chris at fodens@sympatico.ca or Pat Vuurman at pvuurman@hotmail.com or by phone to either of us.

COOS Show Results
September, 2009

It was another fine effort by the Society volunteers at the annual COOS orchid show the end of September.  Again this year the show was held at the Hespeler arena in Cambridge.  As usual their committee had organized the operation to run like clockwork.  The RBG volunteers were somewhat hampered by the low turnout resulting in only 17 flowering plants for the display.  Thanks Chris Foden, Denise Macleod, Robert and Jane Johnstone, Ben and Cindy Boers, Pat and Lynda Vuurman.  Flower quality led to 11 plant ribbons plus the display!
   The results were:
Robert and Jane Johnstone
1st and Best in Class: Phragmipedium China Dragon
Chris Foden
1st  Cattleya warscewiczii ‘Orquifollajes’ x self
Pat and Lynda Vuurman
1st  Paphiopedilum liemianum

Saturday Morning Greenhouse

Attention all Members - We are looking for someone to run the Saturday Morning Greenhouse - Anyone interested please contact Ben Boers.
There are a number of very large orchid plants that need repotting so that the earlier flower production can be retained. Also a person with a special interest in caring for Dendrobiums would be appreciated.
It is also possible to work on pollination and flasking activity on Saturday mornings. Volunteers are not required to attend every Saturday, but some commitment to the collection should be demonstrated.

Flasking Group

The flasking group meets the 2nd Monday and the 2nd Wednesday of each month
